1955 Chevrolet Corvette (1410)
Serial Number VE55S001001
The First Production V-8 Corvette
Summerfield, North Carolina student Steve McCain was so Corvette crazy that he bought his first Vette, a '65, before he graduated from high school. Like many owners, Steve subscribed to "Corvette News" and eagerly consumed each new issue that arrived in the mail. After reading an article one day in 1970 about the original 1953 Corvette, Steve put the word out amongst his Greensboro car friends that he was in the market for a first-generation car of 1953-1955 vintage. One of those friends, Larry Melvin, knew of just such a car, a '55 that belonged to the brother of the owner of "The Corvette Center", a specialty shop in Lexington.
After contacting the owner, who directed him to his parents' Lexington home, Steve found the car as promised; it was almost derelict, but the VIN tag on the driver's door jam read VE55S001001, and the astounded young man, who could not believe his fortune, paid $500 cash and hauled it away.
Four years later in 1974, Steve had restored the car to its original Polo White finish. After a brief time, he then painted it "Resale" Red, and in 1976 sold it to Thomas Harmer, already the owner of the 1956 and '57 Serial Number 001 cars. After seven years enjoying and caring for these treasured machines, Mr. Harmer sold them to Eugene Morton and Jerry Kennedy in 1983. George Swartz and Al Wiseman purchased the cars in 2005. These cars were then painstakingly restored to the highest standards and have received NCRS Top Flight Awards.
