This is about as correct as you could get one. 1966 was the first year for the 427 in a Corvette. When these axel twisten stump pulling monster 427’s were introduced to the public in September of 1965, GM rated this motor at 450 H.P. and proudly put the 450 H.P. decal right on the air cleaner for everyone to see. GM originally listed 450 H.P. @ 6400 RPM. Sometime after the first couple months of production pressure came down from everywhere saying 450 H.P. was too much for a production car. GM was very clever with absolutely no changes to the engine what so ever. Solid lifters 11-1 compression they relisted the H.P. at 425 by checking the H.P. @ 5600 RPM instead of 6400 RPM. Brilliant!!! They even sent out engine recalls to the owners of the first couple of months of cars built. The owners would take their cars to the dealer and the service department would remove the 450 H.P. decal and replace it with a 425 H.P. air cleaner decal. That was it. Clever recall. Many owners found out about it and refused to have them changed (would you, hell no!!). L72 427’s are monsters and will always be worth money in the Corvette collector world.
